Hunza vs Skardu: How the Two Compare

Two of Gilgit-Baltistan's signature valleys, compared for scenery, pace and what each is known for.

Hunza and Skardu are often mentioned together, but they offer distinct experiences. Hunza is known for its terraced orchards, historic forts at Baltit and Altit, and dramatic views of peaks like Rakaposhi along a relatively well-travelled stretch of the Karakoram Highway.

Skardu, further along the route, is the gateway to some of the world's highest mountains and is known for its high-altitude lakes, cold desert landscapes, and access points toward the Deosai plains and Karakoram base camps. It generally feels more remote and rugged than Hunza.

Travellers with limited time often choose one valley; those with more time take the combined 8-day Hunza & Skardu route to see both. Either way, road travel in the region takes time, so realistic scheduling matters — Darwesh Travels' itineraries are built around that.
